On May 8, 15 students of the Master in Interpreting at Ghent University followed a special training on Verbal Interpreting for blind people of hard of hearing.
During a 1.30 hour seminar in the framework of the course of Interpreter Deontology, 15 students received a training based on role plays (see photographs of the classroom, the group, the role-plays, notes on the blackboard).
Special attention was paid to the following aspects:
- Briefing
- How to introduce a blind person/hard of hearing
- Plain language
- Seating
- Interaction management (how to compensate the lack of eye contact or the hearing deficit), turn-taking
- Debriefing
